Can you get paid to care for an elderly/disabled family member?

Caring for the Elderly
Tammy D asked:

I live in California, I am a fulltime college student, but I am moving in with my grandma because she has alzheimers and I can be there most of the time outside of school. Can I get reimbursed for this?

google HomeInstead and see if they will hire you and then hire you out to take care of your grandma, she should be eligible for medicare or medicaid. I don’t think that is illegal or immoral but someone will surely tell you if it is. Then do it anyway.

Yes in some states relatives (not spouses) can get reimbursed through the Medicaid system. Check it out to see if California allows their Medicaid recipients who are certified for home and community based care to choose their own workers. Usually they have to be able to make good decisions and direct their own care so your Grandma may not qualify if she is not able to do this.
