Caring for elderly step parents?

Caring for the Elderly
idoradwaste asked:

A moral question perhaps. My mom, 71 had brain cancer a few years ago and is on the verge of needing care, 24/7. She married a man about 25 years ago. She, always the bread winner of the two, and he worked up until 7 years, then decided that he was ‘retired’ with a $650 SS check and -0- retirement, never planned for retirement. My mom, retired from the U.S. Gov. has already spent her savings and filed for bankruptcy once. Now with her mental capacity deminished, he over spends, buys guns, jewelry and whatever, a habitual spender. Thier financial situation is terrible. Bills don’t get paid, power and gas gets shut off and he tries to hide his spending. My sister has access to watch over their account. We have bailed them out many times, but it never ends. We got them qualified for public housing and they refused! They get mad when we try and take control of their finances. He does watch her most of the time, the one worth while thing he does. Do we take care of our mom only, or both?

Is it unreasonable for someone caring for an elderly relative have one day a week to themself?

Caring for the Elderly
Melissa asked:

I am talking about non emergency things like grocery shopping, etc.
my grandfather is temporarily unable to drive..he wants only my mom to take him for a drive every day, or take him grocery shopping, or any other place he needs to go. She has a VERY painful frozen shoulder condition…she told him she needs tomorow for herself, he “said no you cant have a day for yourself EVERY week, you have to be flexible, I might want to go somewhere…..” she quickly left to avoid an argument.Last weekend he called first thing Saturday morning demanding a ride somewhere. She was in so much pain she was in tears…she told him”I am in terrible pain right now” He answered”Ok, can you pick me up in a half hour?” He didnt even NOTICE that she crying. The whole family is getting tired of his self centeredness, even though it comes and goes. He can be really sweet one minute and like this the next.
