Caring For Elderly Parents - How to Gain Control When Parent is Losing Ability to Make Sound Decisions?
aussiegenes asked:
My dad has always been a brilliant man. But due to a couple of small strokes he now has periods of confusion and is a very unsafe driver. He signs papers for anyone who asks but doesn’t understand what he’s signed. My mother had to go to the store where he’d done this and recover the papers and put them through the shredder. What do you do to gain control over someone who clearly has lost mental capacity to make sound judgements but can legally drive a car and sign papers?! He acts like a child at times but he can get into considerably more trouble than a child. We love him dearly and respect him but we have to protect him from himself and protect Mom from his bad decisions. He’s always been naiive and too trusting of people, and now it’s much more so; he’s very vulnerable to con men who prey on the elderly.

What is wrong with the health care in Canada for elderly persons?
Patricia Y asked:
What is wrong with the health care in Canada for elderly persons?
I am a support worker for Mentally Challenged and Elderly persons. I am very disturbed at the quality of care. During nightime hours I have observed some frightening instances such as one time and elderly was made to sleep in his own feces and urine until morning time due to lack of staffing in Nursing Home and semi Independant Living facilities. Also. from what i have witnessed there is not enough care givers to feed the clients and or patients at meal times therfore meals are being sent back and not givn to patients and or clients. What can we do as human beings to resolve such a devastaing issue?

My concern is how are people who are childfree suppose to get taken care of when they’re elderly?
caltam84 asked:
I myself have no children. And having kids can be really expensive and lots of commitment. One can either choose to be a parent or be childfree.

For those who choose to be childfree, I respect your choice. Don’t let others put you down because of it. If being childfree makes you happy, then please go for it. But my concern is what if the childfree people need to get taken care of once they’re are elderly?
